Royal Holloway was founded in 1886. It received its charter from the University of London in 1900 and later merged with Bedford College (est 1849). The College today has 5500 students studying for degrees in the Sciences, Humanities, Performing Arts and Social Sciences.

Royal Holloway is unique, as it is the only major college of the University of London to be located away from the city centre. THe College is situated 20 miles west of central London, near Egham in Surrey. The 120 acre parkland campus is dominated by the magnificent Founder's Building, which has been described as " the most ebullient building in the south of England.

Students from Royal Holloway benefits from studying at a spacious, largely residential campus, whilst the attraction of London are only a 35 minute train journey away. The campus is the focal point of student life; all teaching and social activities take place there. The College has 2700 study bedrooms on campus, sufficient for over half of the student population. All first year students are guaranteed accommodation on the College campus if they firmly accept the offer of a place on a course.

The College has 21 academic departments, Biochemistry, Biology, Classics, Computer Science, Drama and Theatre, Economics, English, French, Geography, Geology, German, Hispanic Studies, History, Italian, Management, Mathematics, Media Arts, Music, Physics, Psychology and Social and Political Science.

With all department on or adjacent to the campus, there is considerable inter-disciplinary collaboration between the departments in both teaching and research. There are also opportunities for inter-collegiate teaching at other University of London colleges.

The College has a truly international community, with over 20% of our students coming from outside the UK. International students are attracted by the College's proximity to London and Heathrow Airport. Moreover, our campus offers a relatively safe environment away from the centre of the capital, and students from outside the EU can live on campus for the entire length of their course if they wish.
